Oversea Restaurants dazzle with CNY offerings for Year of the Golden Horse

Oversea Restaurants dazzle with CNY offerings for Year of the Golden Horse

Oversea Restaurant is set to dazzle with its Chinese New Year offerings, available from Jan 5 till March 3.

This year’s festive concept is “Golden Horse Embraces a Golden Start”, and Oversea Restaurant’s season offerings reflect a heartfelt wish for a year filled with promise, good fortune and prosperity.

Beyond the classic Yee Sang with Smoked Salmon and Korean Snow Pear,  variations include the Oversea Fabulous Fruity Yee Sang that was bursting with refreshing flavours. There’s also an option Yee Sang with Abalone and Black Truffle.

At the heart of every Oversea celebration is the Prosperity Treasure Pot, the iconic reunion centrepiece. It comes brimming with 16 premium, auspicious ingredients, each chosen for its quality and meaning, slowly simmered for hours in a rich, robust broth. Available for dining and takeaway at RM738++.

The one dish I look forward to every year, the Hong Kong–Style Waxed Meat Claypot Rice, a timeless classic, features fragrant jasmine rice cooked in a claypot for a slight crisp, golden crust. The top is layered with a generous medley of premium waxed meats such as meat and sweet liver sausages, and waxed duck, given a drizzle of savoury soy sauce that’s mixed in for that perfect spoonful. The rice comes in two sizes – RM138++/6 and RM168++/10 with an option to add on foie gras (RM68/piece).

This festive season, Oversea Restaurant also has a couple of new dishes added to the menu – Braised Pork Trotters (RM138++) and Stir-fried Crystal Prawn with Water Chestnut (RM90++). The lubricious melt-in-the-mouth tender meat in a rich, savoury sauce is to.die.for. while the slightly crisp, firm texture of the prawns offers a well-balanced dish of natural sweetness and crunch.

In addition season delights, Oversea Restaurant also has a selection of delectable cookies for gifting: Oriental Muffin (RM39.80/box), Hong Kong Style Egg Rolls (RM29.80/box), Sea Salt Peanut Cookies and Pineapple Ball (RM48.80/per set).

The media had a sneak preview of the new CNY menu at the newly upgraded Sri Petaling outlet, a stunning space with premium flooring, ambient lighting and refined décor. Spacious enough for up to 200 guests, it is perfect for weddings, banquets, annual dinners, and corporate events. The flexible layout is paired with state-of-the-art audiovisual facilities and full event support.

Daesam Sikbang joins the BBQ crowd

Daesam Sikbang is a welcome contender to the Subang Korean food scene. Translated to mean ‘great pork belly restaurant’, there’s no mistaking what meat is the focus here.  It offers a simple bbq menu with three choices – frozen pork belly (naeng dong samgyeopsal), marinated pork

Yu Jia Fish hotpot – old school steamboat with mod flavours

Yu Jia Fish hotpot – old school steamboat with mod flavours

Not another mala hotpot place, I’m thinking. But Yu Jia Fish hotpot in SS2, PJ, was quite different. Rather than the usual deep sunken soup pot, this comes in an apparatus with charcoal in the centre funnel providing the heat.

Apparently Penang-inspired, the soup base is fish stock and one portion for 2-3 pax (RM73) comes ready with vegetables, fried grouper fish pieces, taro, homemade fishball, tofu, seaweed, celery, coriander. There’s a ready bowl of rice wine to add to the soup, but you can opt to leave this out. Of coz, we put this in!

There’s also an option of adding milk to the soup, making it similar to fish head noodles. We chose without milk, and asked for the taro to be separated for us to cook at leisure. The first time we came, we left it in and the soup became thick and starchy.

Even though there were four of us, there was more than enough food, including a few side orders. You can also choose a prawn stock base. The larger pot suits 4-8 pax for RM93.

You can have this set on its own or add meat slices, seafood, vegetables to soft tofu and more, to it. Besides this, there’s also ready to eat sides like belacan chicken, lobak, fried wantan, Yujia fried meat, etc.

Most China-style mala hotpot places may have more soup base and meats/condiments to choose from, but everything also adds up.

I enjoyed this hotpot more as it’s healthier with better quality ingredients at an affordable price. The housemade soybean with chilli sauce is a must-try!

They don’t take reservations so it’s first come first serve. Even at 9pm people were queueing up, so best to come earlier to get a table.
