Singapore's Sago House (one of Asia's 50 Best Bars) co-founder Jay Gray’s recent masterclass at Blue in EQ, KL had attendees learning more about what to drink and how to order what they like to drink. In the How To Read a Drinks Menu, he said that modern cocktail bars had leaned too far into crafting increasingly complex cocktails, to the point that the average bar-goer wouldn’t understand what was being listed on the menu.

In conjunction with World Gin Day, Scottish gin maker Caorunn flew him to KL for the workshops and guest shifts at EQ. Gray explained that cocktails boiled down to six broad archetypes and generally a combination of a base spirit, sweetener, accent and modifier. Participants were given flavour sprays loaded with distinct cocktails and tested by guessing the flavour profile - ranging from umami, to sweet, sour, bitter or spiced. Then they were to rank which profile they preferred and ordered a drink accordingly. Gray suggested that a person’s preference for coffee or tea - with milk or sugar - gives an idea if they like bitter, sweet or botanic cocktails. Your preferences for a meal - sweet tooths to savoury hounds - supertasters tended to prefer sweet drinks as bitters could overwhelm them.

For his guest shift, Gray’s Daisy was the Reanimator 2 with a base spirit of Caorunn Highland Strength Gin combined with fino sherry, Cointreau, Aquavit, lemon and Aer, a vegan egg-white alternative.

Nespresso invites Malaysians to embrace positivity and ‘feel good’ moments over its Barista Creations for Ice coffee range and its thoughtfully crafted coffee recipes. Inspired by the delicious flavours of the tropics and in honour of Brazil’s national drink – the Caipirinha – the lime and mint take centre stage resulting in a refreshing new Barista Creations Liminha over Ice coffee.

Brazilian-native Alessandra Ambrosio – model, actress, fashion designer – is the face of the campaign.

Liminha over Ice is inspired by zesty Brazilian flavours with the notes of lime and mint splash through lightly roasted coffees from around the world. As the classic tropical combination meets the light and delicately fruity Arabicas, a lemony sweetness and a hint of bitterness emerge in this coffee made to be enjoyed with ice.

The Barista Creations for Ice is best served as one coffee capsule (espresso, 40ml) over a handful of ice cubes (90g) and top it up with cold water and cold milk (90ml) to bring out its full flavour. Nespresso carefully designed the roasting and grinding parameters for each blend, to ensure the flavour and quality of the coffee remains top notch even when the ice has melted.

They say the way to a man's heart is thru his stomach. Works with fathers too, which means if you bring Dad along for High Tea at Dorsett Grand Subang, you’ll probably make him a happy man!
With Father's Day fast approaching, Dad gets to enjoy Saturday Buffet Hi-Tea for FREE on June 18 at Terazza Brasserie with a reservation of 3 paying adult guests. The Buffet Hi-Tea is available from 12 noon to 4 pm, featuring a variety of both local savouries such as roasted chicken rice, rendang, noodles with various condiments and choice of soup.

It's dubbed high tea but it’s really a full-fledged lunch menu - there’s rice to go with an assortment of mouth-watering dishes and curries; tom yum and chicken noodle soup; Western fare such as cheese baked pasta and Roast Lamb. I normally avoid the carbs but I must say the fried noodles were very inviting and every bit as good as it looked. We could even make our own croissant sandwich, stuffing it with our choice of filling.

Probably the most tempting section of the buffet line - the dessert corner - there are delightful desserts, cakes, fresh fruits, ice kacang and ice cream as well as free flow teh tarik, coffee, tea and fruits infused water.

Every table reservation made for this Father's Day Buffet Hi-Tea will also receive a 20% discount voucher redeemable for the Dim Sum Brunch at The Emperor Chinese Restaurant on the next visit.  The Buffet Hi Tea is priced at RM98 nett for adults; RM78 nett for Senior Citizen aged 60 and above; and RM48 nett for children between the ages of 6 to 12.

And if you prefer ENGLISH Hi-Tea at the Piano Lounge, there's sumptuous Afternoon Tea Set from 12 noon to 5 pm on June 19. Priced at RM128 nett for two persons, DAD gets to enjoy a FREE pie as well as receive a 20% discount voucher redeemable for Terazza Brasserie's buffet dinner on the next visit.

High Tea is available every Saturday as well (without the 4th pax eat free offer). For reservation, call +60 3 5031 6060.

Quick review: What are you having for breakfast or lunch tomorrow? Stumbled upon Rustic Borneo Kitchen thanks to a friend's post, and it's now my fav go-to coffeeshop for Sarawak Laksa! The broth is flavourful with a well-balanced consistency - not too rich or thick - and came with prawns, shredded chicken, omelette strips and beansprouts. My biggest quibble with most places is that the soup is watered down. Either that or, they add dunno what spices that it's no longer recognisable as Sarawak Laksa anymore. Here, every last drop was slurped up so guess that means we def approve! Kolo Mee, another popular Sarawak dish, so simple but not easy to pull off as it's hugely dependent on the noodle texture. Springy and adequately doused in sauce without being soggy, this was such a joy. Tomato Noodles was also nicely done, with the tomato flavour infused into the gravy, the kway teow (flat rice noodles) lightly fried for added umami. Usually I don't like this dish as it tastes like ketchup plus water which is disgusting. Other noodle choices are Crispy noodles or yellow mee. Other Sarawakian fare include Cha Chu Noodles which is like Hailam Mee, given a healthy dose of rice wine, Mee Pok, Mani Chai Bihun and more. There's also a Western food menu for those not into Asian carbs.  Another interesting dish is the Salad Chicken Rice which I've been meaning to try. My next visit, for sure. The resto doesn't have a location drop but it's just around the corner of the apartment mentioned above.

Quick review: Don't you just love it when a cafe is filled with plants? So happy that Taman Hati just opened in my hood - lovely place to chill, have a cup of coffee and even attend some classes. Jan, co-owner of @planterchin, has seamlessly infused a similar concept into her latest venture, and what's even more attractive is that you don't have to battle the city's jam to pay a visit. At the moment, @tamanhatijz only serves coffee, cakes and sandwiches, but later on, maybe the kitchen might churn up hot food. Meantime, feel free to drop by to soak up the calming ambience or play with the resident cats.

Tiger Crystal’s Fire Starter platform went live in May to empower Malaysians to discover new passions and unlock their potential and skills. The platform’s website https://firestarter.tigerbeer.com/ features a cool AR facial recognition tool and personality assessment to enable fans to find out passions best suited for them. The results - be it bouldering, rollerblading, dancing, jump rope, or freestyle football – can then be downloaded and shared on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtags #FireStarterMY and #TigerCrystalMY with @tigerbeermy tagged. Each posting stands to win exclusive classes and prizes weekly since it kicked off until June 7. The highlight of the campaign is the action-packed weekend of the Fire Starter District Festival that ends on Sunday at Sentul Depot. Uncage your inner fire by discovering a new passion and trying them out first-hand with the guidance of mentors over some crystal-cold Tiger Crystal. Sentul Depot was transformed into a hub of activity with unique and interactive game cubes. Fans who attend the festival will get to redeem three crystal-cold Tiger Crystal bottles. Exciting prizes worth more than RM5,000 total are also up for grabs at the festival. Deets on kameatwithme.com

Chiqui Don opened in Sept 2019 and is the only resto (that I know) which encourages diners to submit recipes to its unique crowdsourced menu. The community-based concept takes inspiration from its diners and creates dishes based on their personal input. If your recipe is selected, you get to work with the chef to fine-tune the dish and see it get listed on the menu! How cool is that?

Offering a repertoire of local and global flavours, @chiqui_don takes up a generous space in Damansara Heights in red and orange hues with pared down brown notes. The result is a chic kitchen and bar that not only looks classy but delivers. Invited to try the newly revamped menu, the evening started with bespoke cocktails, carefully crafted to match our current mood. No idea what @kimster_choong worked out with the bartender but it was a magical potion designed just for me. Turns out she knows my taste buds pretty well!

*Oven Baked Nachos topped with shredded mozzarella, homemade guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream (RM26). Absolutely scrumptious.
*A spin on prawn gambas pil pil, Garlic Chilli Sea Bass - small chunks of fish sautéed in olive oil with garlic and chilli flakes with crusty garlic bread (RM26) for dunking in the oil. Slightly salty and heavy on garlic but personally I really enjoyed this.
*Chiqui Fries - perfectly crisp outside and fluffy inside except the truffle oil didn't shine.
*Seafood Trio - Tossed in vongole sauce, freshness of ingredients is key here otherwise the whole dish fails. Happy to report it hit all the right notes.
*Grilled Lamb Rack - New Zealand grass-fed lamb rack chops crusted with herbs served with homemade yogurt mint sauce. Loved the creamy mash, lamb was nicely still pink, moist and tender. The yogurt mint sauce gave a welcome spin to ordinary mint sauce.

Many other things caught my eye on the menu - Sambal Salmon Aglio Olio, Mutton Claypot Rice, Mutton Varuval with flatbread ... sadly I have but one stomach so looks like I need to come back!

Be transported to golden wheat fields, hear the howling wind, smell the fresh alpine air and feel the cool breeze while tasting a refreshing glass of Edelweiss at a crisp Alpine temperature. That’s what Edelweiss beer conjured up at Publika KL. Chalet Edelweiss began its journey there and will move on to Eco Palladium, Johor Bahru from June 6 to 12, and then Straits Quay, Penang from June 16 to 19.

Guests were greeted by the sight of wheat fields, mossy mountains and herb hills while feeling the wind and cool breeze, allowing people to hit the refresh button. From the peaks of the Alps, guests were met with an Alpine-inspired campground when they stepped outside and enjoyed freshly tapped Edelweiss from the Edelweiss BLADE machine. Edelweiss brand ambassadors were also there to guide guests to tap their perfect glass of Edelweiss.

Guests can enjoy special Edelweiss discounts at nearby participating modern on-trade outlets KL, Johor and Penang, and score exclusive merchandise and gifts at Chalet Edelweiss when they join in on-ground activities. Look out for the Penang and Johor edition.
