I first tasted Churn’s ice cream in Sept 2020 during the first Lockdown when they had a giveaway. I still have fond memories of that delish Earl Grey ice cream! Fast forward almost 2 years later, today Churn has a full-fledged shop with more than 10 flavours to choose from daily, not to mention lip-smacking good sourdough waffles.
A passion project that started from home, CK Lee and Wendy Lee decided to focus on ice cream as they felt it was something everyone would enjoy, and a faithful companion for both good and bad times. If you’ve watched enough American shows, you’ll be familiar with how they wallow in misery by finishing a whole tub of ice cream!
CK felt frustrated that whenever any of his friends talked about enjoying great-tasting ice cream, it was overseas but Malaysia didn’t seem to have anything great to offer in this respect. He saw that there was a niche to fill as local choices were limited and good quality ice cream was not easy to come by. And as a culinary arts graduate, he was more than equipped to explore the possibilities.
Aptly named Churn, an action used to produce or make ice cream, it’s also about churning out happy memories while enjoying the flavours. Made using natural ingredients that are free from artificial additives, preservatives, stabilizers, and emulsifiers, the artisanal ice cream banks on fav flavours and produced after endless testing for the perfect balance.
The proof is in the pudding – or on a waffle in this instance. Fragrant, smooth and creamy, the Earl Grey lived up to its reputation and was one of the best I’ve had. Subtle yet sublime, it struck a fine balance between tea and dessert, especially when perched on a crisp batter that was lightly crusty on the outside, and soft and slightly chewy inside. Mango Passion Fruit sorbet is now my new fav, tart and acidic, the sour taste wakes you up and pools the saliva in your mouth to envelop your taste buds and then teases with mild sweetness.
I hear CK spent hours perfecting his chocolate flavour. And still working on it… gotta go back to try it. As the latest ice cream parlour in town, I dare say it’ll give the popular old guards a run for their money. They’ve got a fan in me, at any rate.
