Best of both worlds at Harome
So here’s what you need to know about Harome. It’s NOT a Malay restaurant! The sister branch of Habanna charbroiled steakhouse that’s just in the next block, it offers the same Western menu as Habanna, but is pork-free plus it has really good Asian dishes.
I liked the Mee Rebus. This is subjective as one of my lunch mates felt it was a bit sweet, but otherwise we all agreed that it was one of the better versions around. Besides really delicious mee rebus, what I came back for was the Lontong and it did not disappoint. The yellow Kuah Sayur Lodeh was creamy but light and flavourful, and it checks all the boxes. Altogether a comforting one-dish meal.
The winning score was the broth for the Soto Ayam with nasi impit (pressed rice cubes). You can also have a choice of vermicelli. Robust, authentic, subtle yet with depth. Not too heavy a bowl, makes a good simple meal.
This time I tried the Nasi Hujan Panas (fragrant basmati rice mixed with herbs) with rendang instead of crispy chicken (which was also very good) – the tender, tasty meat pieces went great with rice, and you need to douse everything with the luscious gravy! You can also have Asam Pedas Daging Tetel with white rice, or get the Gerang Asam Ikan Jenahak. The beef was nicely tender with a tinge of sour, different but still very good. I would have liked the fish to be more sour and spicier, but this Melaka version is probably more popular with the general crowd.
Western fare – the popular 3 Amigo’s, 3-pc boneless chicken thigh glazed and grilled with sweetish sour housemade BBQ sauce – was well-delivered and above average, as was the perfect pink Mini Lamb Rack paired with excellent housemade mint sauce, more like a chutney.
Highly recommend this neighbourhood resto: clean, pleasing decor and warm ambience – something for everyone, large portions plus very reasonable prices, Harome is definitely well worth a visit or two, and more.
