Third time lucky at Third Serving

It’s like a hug from an old friend. Third Serving, located in the new KLGC mall, is the reincarnation of the original Oriental Cravings in 1 Utama mall, Petaling Jaya and the menu holds many of the old favourites which they were known for, and strikes a chord with many who used to love the place.
The set-up is simple, almost basic for now, no fancy concept decor. Good food is the main focus of the day.
I had to order the Claypot loh shu fun, for sure, and it didn’t disappoint as the familiar comforting taste still spells home. Smokey and savoury from the soya sauce and cooking in the clay pot, the noodles acquire a lovely fragrance and depth to an otherwise predictable simple dish. The OG chef who used to be at Oriental Cravings is now cooking at Third, so you expect flavours to be familiar and hearty.

Well-known for its curry laksa, the one at Third was also hearty and rich, chock full of ingredients, albeit sans cockles which I miss. The gravy was thick and creamy, and if you’re a small eater, the portion is enough for two.

They’ve also got timeless classic dishes such as minced pork patty with dong choy (preserved veg) and minced pork with potatoes, great with rice. Portions for dishes are a wee bit on the small side, but it’s so nice to be able to have dai chow (big fry up) dishes in a mall. While prices are a little steeper, it’s a trade off for the clean environment and comforting food in the midst of all the fast food outlets around. Also available are traditional recipes like black vinegar pork trotters, kangkung belacan and braised chicken.

For something different, there’s toasted muffin with homemade kaya and a generous slab of butter – this was scrumptious, and even someone who mostly drinks long black (me) was enticed to try their delicious iced coffee with cream.

Being in a mall in a premium location, expect to pay more but at least you’re assured of homecooked flavours and quality food at Third Serving.
